<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable viewing angle type liquid crystal display device with which the viewing angle is controlled, and which is manufactured at a low cost and with a high yield. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device has a light shielding layer which is disposed on an inside surface of one substrate, out of inside surfaces in the vicinity of liquid crystal side surfaces of two substrates with a nematic liquid crystal layer having positive dielectric anisotropy interposed in between. A plurality of electrode pairs composed of common electrodes, pixel electrodes, and viewing angle control electrodes are formed and arranged on the inside surface on the other substrate. The image is displayed by driving the liquid crystal with an electric field corresponding to the image data formed between the pixel electrode and the common electrode. The viewing angle is controlled in such a way that the liquid crystal driven with the electric field formed between the viewing angle control electrode and the common electrode forms contrast with which it is hard to visually recognize the display when obliquely seen by an observer. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT</p> |
