PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination system for a staircase in which a user can walk down from a downward step without feeling of dazzlingness because of an illumination light even if the illuminating light for a staircase is arranged in the user's sight when the use looks down from the downward step and moreover a difference of shadows of a step board and a step height is made clear when the user faces upward and the user can climb steps safely. SOLUTION: An output of the illumination light 2 when switched on by a switch 9 on a side of the downward step 6 is set up smaller than the output of the illumination light 2 when switched on by a switch 8 on a side of the upward step 5.
