PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly detect the contact of a magnetic head with a magnetic disk. SOLUTION: The main controller of a HDD repeatedly carries out the operation of reading data from a magnetic disk to measure a bit error rate (BER) (S6) while gradually (S1) increasing the amount of power supplied to the heater of a magnetic head from a lowest level (S5) until the measured BER exceeds a reference BER (S7).
