PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for driving a display element having a fast display speed and high reflectance in a white display. SOLUTION: The method for driving a display element that contains an electrolyte containing silver or a compound having silver in the chemical structure between counter electrodes and is operated by controlling a voltage between the counter electrodes so as to induce dissolution precipitation of silver, is characterized in that: the display element is driven by an active matrix system; and a nondisplay image is displayed by controlling a voltage to be applied to counter electrodes in nondisplay pixels to 0.2 A to 1.0 A, wherein A represents a precipitation overvoltage of silver present in the electrolyte.
