The present invention relates to process for the recovery of butanol from an aqueous medium by adsorbing butanol to a hypercrosslinked microporous resin. The invention further relates to a process for the fermentative production of butanol comprising fermenting a microorganism capable of producing butanol in a suitable fermentation medium and recovering butanol from the fermentation medium by adsorption to a hypercrosslinked microporous resin and the use of butanol recovered by a process according to the present invention as a chemical agent or a (bio)fuel.
