Method of Imaging a Coding Pattern With Plurality of Orientation Features in Each Tag

A method of imaging a coding pattern disposed on a surface of a substrate. The method comprises the steps of: (a) operatively positioning an optical reader relative to the surface and capturing an image of a portion of the coding pattern; (b) sampling and decoding at least three orientation symbols contained in the imaged portion; (c) determining, from the decoded orientation symbols, the orientation of a layout of tag data relative to a target grid; and (d) using the determined orientation to sample and decode the tag data. The imaged portion has a diameter of at least one tag diameter and less than two tag diameters.
