The method involves examining whether fuel injection takes place in certain operating conditions. An error of a pressure holding valve (160) is recognized when the injection is not initiated. A determination is made whether a boost pressure control does not reach a desired value of load pressure in full load. A failure of the pressure holding valve is recognized based on a disturbed amount of fuel balance. A faulty mass balance is recognized when a rise of a rail pressure is detected and a suction control valve is closed. An independent claim is also included for a device for diagnosing a pressure holding valve of a common rail system.
