METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR EVALUATING PARTICLE CHARACTERISTIC

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a system capable of improving the signal-to-noise ratio during particle characteristic by implementing a phase sensitive technique which allows for clearly distinguishing between the signals from the particle and the background.

SOLUTION: In the system, a channel 34 includes optical elements 32 for modulating emitted light within a detection region. The system includes a detector 31 for detecting the emitted light from the optical elements 32 as a function of time. Light is emitted from a particle 36 and a particle 38 that are traveling down the channel 34. The relative movement between the particles 36 and 38 and the optical element system 32 creates the modulation desired to be able to appropriately analyze the particle 36 and 38. The spatially modulated optical elements create a time modulated signal in the detector 31. This signal is analyzed using a processing module 39.
