The invention relates to a method for reading a Fourier hologram (7) reco rded on a holographic storage medium (6) with a holographic storage system ( 1). The method comprises the steps of: calculating a characteristic value fr om a detected image of a reconstructed Fourier hologram in at least two rela tive positions of a reference beam (3) and said storage medium (6), each of the characteristic values being indicative of a misalignment of the referenc e beam (3) and said storage medium (6) at the respective relative position, calculating a servo value from the measured characteristic values, determini ng an aligned relative position of said reference beam (3) and said storage medium (6) by means of a predetermined servo function using the calculated s ervo value, setting the relative position of the reference beam (3) and said storage medium (6) to said aligned relative position, and detecting an imag e at said aligned relative position. The invention also relates to a hologra phic storage system (1) for reading a Fourier hologram (7) recorded on a hol ographic storage medium (6), said system (1) comprising reference beam (3) g enerating means, storage medium (6) receiving means and a detector (5) for d etecting a reconstructed hologram. The system (1) further comprises a servo control unit (14) for executing the method according to the invention.
