The device has a guide rail (16) fastened to a body (10) of a motor vehicle. Guiding units (24, 26) connected with a sliding door (12) are moved by the guide rail that is attached to a roof rail (18) of the motor vehicle. The guide rail has a guiding slide for rotating the guiding units connected with the sliding door in an opening phase and for adjustably arranging the guiding units in the guide rail in another opening phase. The guiding units connected with the sliding door are designed as parallelogram levers.
