The invention relates to an exterior rear view mirror for motor vehicles, comprising a mirror base (2) that can be fastened to the motor vehicle, a mirror head (3) which supports a mirror glass, can be swiveled relative to the mirror base (2) about a swiveling axis (44) by means of a drive unit (1), is attached to the mirror base (2) with the aid of a joint, and can be folded from a useful position (F to P) towards the vehicle under the effect of an impact, and a gear (6) that is connected to the mirror base (2) under the effect of at least one pressure spring (8) via unlockable locking means (16a, 16b, 16c, 18a, 18b, 18c) in the useful position, is braced between the mirror head (3) and the mirror base (2), is disposed coaxial to the swiveling axis (44), drivingly engages with the drive unit, and is arranged in a drive unit housing (4, 5). The aim of the invention is to create a light-weight exterior rear view mirror that requires a small number of parts, develops little noise, and is easy and economical to produce. Said aim is achieved by making the gear (6) and the second locking means (18a, 18b, 18c) from an injection-moldable plastic material while embodying the gear (6) and the second locking means (18a, 18b, 18c) in a monolithic fashion, embodying the opposite stopping means (19a, 19b, 19c) of the mirror head (3) located on the mirror head and a metal housing closure (5) lying opposite the mirror base (2) as a single piece, and making the drive unit housing (4) that adjoins the housing closure (5) from an injection-moldable plastic material. |
