PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for stopping cooling water in an electric resistance spot welding machine, by which method and apparatus, the leakage of the cooling water can be prevented in changing electrodes, and further to provide the electric resistance spot welding machine. SOLUTION: The cooling water to be supplied from a cooling water supply pipe 10 is intercepted, and compressed air is supplied into the cooling water supply pipe 10 for a required time. As a result, the cooling water remaining in the cooling water supply pipe 10 and a cooling water discharge pipe 11 is discharged following the compressed air. In this case, it is preferable that the air is removed from the cooling water in a vapor-liquid separating device 25 by discharging the water by accompanying the compressed air via a residual water discharging pipe 12 connected to the cooling water discharge pipe 11, and the cooling water is supplied to the cooling water supply pipe 10 again so as to circulate.
