PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multi-barrier IPM electric motor, having both useful characteristics of synchronous reluctance machine and permanent magnet machine. SOLUTION: A rotor 30 for an internal permanent magnet machine has its rotor body 14, having an output shaft 15, and a first cavity 18 with a magnetic material 17 filled therein. A second cavity is disposed closer to the center side from the first cavity, and no magnetic material is filled therein. A nonmagnetic rod 34 passes through the second cavity and protrudes to a region beyond the end of the rotor body. The rod is compressed into a bottomed hole 50 on nonmagnetic endplates 46, 48 disposed adjacent to the end of the rotor body. Shrink discs 62, 64 are set face to face with the endplate and are shrunk around the protruding end of the output shaft. In order to prevent an induced voltage from generating current in a cage formed by the rod and the endplate, an oxide layer 56 is disposed in between the rod and the bottomed hole of the endplate.
