PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable operating valve apparatus that improves mainly returnability to a fixed position of an intake valve timing. SOLUTION: A variable operating valve apparatus for engine includes an oil pump (31) for supplying hydraulic oil, and a variable valve timing mechanism (11) at intake side that receives the supply of hydraulic oil from the oil pump (31) in an advanced angle hydraulic chamber (17), provides continuously variable control of rotational phase difference between crankshaft and intake side camshaft (2), and enables the intake valve timing to advance between the most delayed angle position and the most advanced angle position. When advancing the intake valve timing from an initial position, the number of supply oil passages for hydraulic oil from the oil pump (31) to the advanced angle hydraulic chamber (17) is changed between from an initial position to an intermediate position and after passing the intermediate position, so that a response time becomes relatively quicker from the initial position to the intermediate position between the most delayed angle position and the most advanced angle position, while the response time becomes relatively slower after passing the intermediate position.
