PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating a blast furnace, wherein in the blast furnace operation for blending a large quantity of pellets in a coke-center charging, the growth of zinc-stuck material on a furnace wall is restrained and also, a gas permeability in the furnace is kept well and further, a high productivity and a low coke ratio operation can be realized. SOLUTION: When the coke-center charging is performed under condition of blending a large quantity of the pellets having≥50 mass% pellet blending ratio in ores, an ore layer thickness ratio Lo/(Lc+Lo)at the uppermost part in the furnace is≤0.1 at the furnace center part zone (R/Ro≤0.1) and≥0.5 at the furnace peripheral part zone (0.6≤R/Ro≤1.0). Further, a terrace length ratio Rt/Ro of the coke layer at the uppermost part in the furnace, is preferably 0.4-0.9, wherein Lc: the thickness of the coke layer, Lo: the thickness of the ore layer, R: the distance from the furnace center in the radius direction of the furnace, Ro: the radius at the furnace opening hole part, and Rt: the terrace length of the coke layer.
