The method involves monitoring function of an assembly of an automatic gear. A disturbance counter of the assembly is incremented during detection of an assembly-specific disturbance of the automatic gear. A compensation measure is introduced, in which detected component is not used as defect even, if the disturbance counter exceeds a maximum value. The function of the introduced compensation measure is monitored, and an additional compensation measure is introduced during the detection of the disturbance of the introduced compensation measure.
