The foreign-substance-laden gas is made to flow between end regions (4,5) in an interior space (3) of a tube heat exchanger (1), and is cooled by contacting with a set of tubes (6) that are traversed by coolant. The gas flow is deflected in the end region (5), and is then passed through the interior space and another set of tubes (7) for heat exchange. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) device for purifying foreign-substance-laden gas; and (2) method for operating device for purifying foreign-substance-laden gas.
