<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal optical element that can be used for an optical pickup, with the liquid crystal optical element provided for removing wavefront aberrations in laser beams and extremely suppresses the occurrence of astigmatism due to a temperature change, and to provide an optical pickup device with the optical element. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal optical element clamps a liquid crystal layer between two transparent substrates via a sticker having an elliptic shape of a boundary line in contact with the liquid crystal layer.
