PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character input device capable of presenting a user with input-candidate character strings that match the progress of a process by an application program.

SOLUTION: The character input device has an application execution means for executing an application program. A dictionary containing words related to the application program is stored. From the plurality of words contained in the dictionary, words that match the progress of a process executed by the application execution means are selected as words serving as display candidates. Based on the words selected and input characters input by the user, a plurality of input-candidate character strings is displayed.
