PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which is a sheet through type and can more securely remove foreign matter sticking on a read glass for reading an image of a document being carried or remaining foreign matter to prevent a read image from having striped noise. SOLUTION: A read front roller pair 25 send out the document so that the document passes a read position A. The read glass 36 is provided below the document P being carried at the read position A. A step portion C as an edge portion of a step sheet 37 is provided upstream from the read position A to form a surface higher than the surface of the read glass 36 on the side of the document P. The step portion C is moved more upstream from the read glass 36 when the front end and rear end of the document P pass the read position A than when the center part of the document P passes the read position A.
