PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve high linear recording density and high recording truck density to improve an areal density of a vertical magnetic recording unit equipped with a magnetic head having a main magnetic pole surrounded by a trailing shield and side shield. SOLUTION: The shields are set in the trailing side and both sides of the main magnetic pole 22 for recording magnetic information. A minimum magnetic distance T-Gap between the main magnetic pole 22 and the trailing shield 21, a minimum magnetic distance S-Gap between the main magnetic pole and the side shields 23 in the both sides of the main pole, a distance Lmag from the surface of the main magnetic pole to the bottom surface of a magnetic recording layer 41 constituting a recording medium, and a distance HUS from the surface of the main magnetic pole to the lower soft magnetic layer 43 of the recording medium are defined, each magnetic distance is set to meet relations Lmag<T-Gap and HUS<S-Gap as well as a relation Lmag<T-Gap<HUS<S-Gap.
