A security device for a letterbox flap, comprises slotted brackets 1 fixed in use to the inside of a door on either side of a letterbox, and an engaging bar 5 with a round or oval profile, wherein the bar is inserted into the slotted brackets and can be manually moved up and down therein, to either prevent opening of the flap 9 or to allow the flap to remain open. The engaging bar may be of fixed or variable length and is preferably telescopic using either friction ferrules or a screw thread fixing. The bar may have a handle, preferably larger than the bracket slot to prevent removal therefrom. The bracket slot may be provided at an inclined angle to the letterbox aperture, to allow the engaging bar to rest against flaps of different thickness. A letterbox is secure when the bar is at the base of the slotted bracket, the bar is prevented from automatic movement up the slot by pressure thereupon from the letterbox flap. The security status of the device may be indicated by a colour coded bar and handle, with one side of the oval bar red, the other green. The oval bar may be a slightly smaller size than the bracket slot thus permitting rotation. The security device may be provided integral with a letterbox back plate, preferably incorporating a draught excluding device. |
