A method of controlling a printer including; a step (S102) of detecting if a roll paper holder (45) is installed at a main printer unit (1) when the main printer unit power turns on; a step of detecting a closed state of a paper transportation path (5) in the main printer unit; a step of detecting paper by means of a leading end detector (33) and a trailing end detector (27) disposed at the paper transportation path; a step (S204) of discharging the paper from the paper transportation path when the paper is detected only by the leading end detector (33), and a step (S202) of indexing the paper in the paper transportation path when the paper is detected only by the trailing end detector (27).
