The device has main and auxiliary evaluation units (28, 30) with main and auxiliary signal inputs (28E, 30E) to receive main and auxiliary periodic input signals, respectively, and a frequency modulator (26) generating a master signal representing a set point magnitude such as absolute position, positional increment and speed of an offset rotary printing press (2). A signal generator i.e. virtual encoder (34), generates a periodic signal based on the master signal and sends the periodic signal and the main periodic input signal to the evaluation unit (28).
