An image reproducing apparatus and method are provided to perform reproducing reversely with a small quantity of a buffer by extracting the pre-set number of image frames according to reproduction multiplication information. An IDR(Instantaneous Decoding Refresh) searching unit(106) searches an IDR frame in a backward direction starting from a pre-set end point according to reverse reproduction information among image frames included in a coded image stream. When the reverse reproduction information is inputted, an image extracting unit(108) sets the end point according to the inputted reverse reproduction information and extracts image frames from the IDR frame searched by the IDR searching unit too the pre-set end point. A decoder(110) decodes the extracted image frames. An image frame buffer(112) stores the decoded image frames. A reproduction direction controller(118) controls the output order of the image frames stored in the image frame buffer. A reading unit(120) reads the image frames stored in the image frame buffer and outputs them onto a screen.
