PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prolong the life of a starter while automatically starting an engine in a vehicle such as a hybrid car which frequently starts the engine. SOLUTION: This automatic engine starter has a starter motor 3, a starter 2 having a planetary gear transmission 4 and an over running clutch 5 and a controller 1 to turn a switch on/off for electric current to the starter motor 3. The controller 1 detects the rotation frequencies of the drive shaft 51 and the driven shaft 52 of the over running clutch 5. When a specified condition is satisfied based on the result of the comparison of both of the rotation frequencies, the controller 1 stops the current supply to the starter motor 3 automatically. When proper conditions are specified, current supply time to the starter motor 3 can be reduced with an engine nearly securely started automatically, therefore the service life of the starter 2 can be prolonged and the power consumption of a battery can be saved. |
