The device is operated by means of at least one operating program and consumes electrical energy whilst operating. At least one threshold for energy consumption is set; when the threshold is reached, further operation of the machine is influenced. The device can be selectively operated with one of several operating programs, of which at least two differ in one or two threshold values. An Independent claim is also included for a method of operating the device.
