A hair dryer with a radiant element comprises a resistive heater element, a holder and a u-shaped halogen tube, the holder being formed from a pair of plates assembled in cross form and having the resistive heater element wound around notched edges thereof in a spiral and the u-shaped halogen tube mounted such that its arms are parallel to the central axis of the holder and are under the spiral layer forming the heating resistor. The halogen tube may be independently connected within the dryer circuit. In use, the hair dryer provides controlled supplies of both hot air and ultraviolet radiation.
