<p>The electrode has negative polarity. The arc is pulsed between a low, basic current level and a high current level. In the low current phase, a diffuse arc burns between the electrode (1) end region (2) and the workpiece (5). The length of the electrode end region is preferably 3 to 5 times the electrode diameter. In the high current phase, an arc with a bright core (6) and halo (7) burns between electrode and workpiece. The bright core attaches to the tip of the electrode and the halo surrounds the end region (2) of the electrode. In the low current phase, the current consumption is preferably 10-30 A. The electrode melt rate is 8-11 kg/h. The electrode is a wire of diameter 1.0 to 1.2 mm. The protective gas or gas mixture used, contains argon, helium, carbon dioxide, oxygen and/or nitrogen. The preferred helium content is 30-60 vol%. The workpiece is a steel or a non-ferrous metal.</p> |
