A timer management device of a router in a network system and a method thereof are provided to enable an RIP(Routing Information Protocol)/RIPng(RIP Next Generation for IPv6) router to receive an update message including an update timer to decide whether a path existing at a table is valid, thereby preventing path flapping as reducing a load of the network system. A validity decider decides whether connection with preset neighbor routers(100-2,100-3) is valid. If it is confirmed that the connection with the neighbor routers is not valid through the validity decider, a timer setup unit(120) resets a timeout timer value through received update timer values. If update messages including the update timer values are received from the at least one neighbor router, a timer comparator(130) detects the biggest update timer value of the received update timer values to compare the detected value with the preset timeout timer value.
