An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) and a method for driving the same are provided to compensate for brightness of a specific region of an input image adaptively considering surrounding brightness, thereby realizing a clear image. A block-basis histogram analysis unit(151) analyzes histograms of an input image by a block unit of nxn. A neighboring block histogram analysis unit(152) analyzes a histogram of a block adjacent to a main block. A block-basis transform function selection unit(153) selects optimum transform functions for the main block and the neighboring block based on a frequency distribution with respect to brightness, as the calculated result by the block-basis histogram analysis unit and the neighboring block histogram analysis unit. A middle transform function selection unit(154) compares the transform functions for of the main block to select the optimum middle transform function for reducing a transform width between the two transform functions. A block-basis data stretching process unit(155) modulate pixels included in the main block into output data corresponding to the input data based on the selected middle transform function. |
