An IPTV service system for providing weather contents and a method thereof are provided to offer the weather contents to digital TVs connected to the IP STBs(Set Top Boxes) of plural subscribers in a multicast method, thereby enabling the subscribers to receive IPTV weather services. An IPTV(Internet Protocol Television) service system for providing weather contents includes a data broadcasting system(192), a PSI/SI providing system, a multiplexing system(110), and a network switch system(150). The data broadcasting system has a data manager for receiving weather information periodically updated from a weather contents provider and generates data for data broadcasting including the received weather information. The PSI/SI(Program Specific Information/Service Information) providing system provides PSI/SI information about a weather channel to a user terminal. The multiplexing system multiplexes the data for data broadcasting including the weather information with the PSI/SI information about the weather channel, makes the multiplexed stream into an IP(Internet Protocol) packet, and outputs the IP packet. The network switch system transmits the IP packetized signal received from the multiplexing system and EPG(Electronic Program Guide) to the user terminal in a multicast method through an IP network. |
