Independent claims are also included for: (1) compounds (I) other than 6,7,8-trihydroxy-2H-1-benzopyran-2-one; (2) plant extract containing one or more compounds (I); (3) medicament for treating or preventing diseases involving oxidative stress and/or inflammatory reactions, comprising at least one compound (I); (4) dietitic product for supporting the treatment of or for prophylaxis of diseases involving oxidative stress and/or inflammatory reactions, comprising at least one compound (I); (5) composition comprising at least one compound (I) or a plant extrract as above as an oral dosage form. MECHANISM OF ACTION : Antioxidant; Leukotriene synthesis inhibitor; Prostaglandin synthesis inhibitor; Proinflammatory cytokine synthesis inhibitor. Activated murine peritoneal macrophages were incubated with 6,7,8-trihydroxy-2H-1-benzopyran-2-one (100 microg/ml for) 30 minutes before adding lipopolysaccharide. Interleukin-1beta , tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-6 levels were reduced by 88%, 26% and 97%, respectively, compared with controls.
