A liquid crystal aligning agent is provided to develop a high voltage holding ratio, and to show low-baking characteristics regardless of use temperature. A liquid crystal aligning agent contains polymer having an amic acid bond unit represented by the following formula (1a) and an imide bond unit represented by the following formula (1b), and an imidazole compound represented by the following formula (A). In the polymer, a ratio of the imide bond unit number to the total bond unit number of the amic acid bond unit and imide bond unit is 10-80%. In the formula (1a), P^1 is a tetravalent organic group, and Q^1 is a divalent organic group. In the formula (1b), P^2 is a tetravalent organic group, and Q^2 is a divalent organic group. In the formula A, R^1, R^2, and R^3 are, independently of one another, a hydrogen atom or alkyl group, and n is an integer of 0-3.
