<p>New fluorescent dye compounds (I) consist of 2-styryl-N-(sulfanylalkyl)-pyridinium salts or their S-substituted derivatives, where the alkyl of the sulfanylalkyl moiety is interrupted or terminated by an ammonium or cationic heterocyclic moiety. Pyridinium-substituted thiol derivative fluorescent dye compounds of formula (I) and their mineral or organic acid addition salts, optical and geometric isomers, hydrates and other solvates are new. G : NRcRd or optionally substituted (os) 1-6C alkoxy; Rc, RdH, arylalkyl or os 1-6C alkyl; Rg, R'g, Rh, R'hH, halo, NH2, mono- or dialkylamino, CN, COOH, OH, CF3, acylamino, alkoxy, 2-4C mono- or polyhydroxyalkoxy, alkylcarbonyloxy, alkoxycarbonyl, alkylcarbonylamino, acylamino, CONH2, alkylsulfonylamino, SO2NH2 or 1-16C alkyl (os by 1-12C alkoxy, OH, CN, COOH, NH2 or mono- or dialkylamino); R'i, R''iH or alkyl; Ta-N+>(R)(R0>)-; or cationic heterocycloalkyl or heteroaryl; R, R0>H, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or aralkyl; m, n : 0-6; m + n : 1-10; M' : counter-anion; Y : H, alkali(ne earth) metal, NH4+>, PH4+>, mono-, di-, tri- or tetraalkyl-ammonium, mono-, di-, tri- or tetraalkyl-phosphonium or thiol protecting group; The alkyl moieties have 1-4C unless specified otherwise.
