New fluorescent dye compounds (I) consist of 2-styryl-N-(sulfanylalkyl)-pyridinium salts or their S-substituted derivatives, where the alkyl of the sulfanylalkyl moiety is interrupted or terminated by an ammonium or cationic heterocyclic moiety. Pyridinium-substituted thiol derivative fluorescent dye compounds of formula (I) and their mineral or organic acid addition salts, optical and geometric isomers, hydrates and other solvates are new.
