Producing organic compounds e.g. dichloropropanol involves producing glycerol from renewable raw materials; and subjecting the produced glycerol to a reaction with a chlorinating agent in presence of acetic acid or its derivatives. The glycerol is obtained by conversion of animal fats, or obtained during the manufacture of biodiesel. The crude glycerol is optionally purified by e.g. distillation, before the reaction with chlorinating agent. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a process for separation of a mixture containing at least water, dichloropropane and hydrogen chloride; and (2) a pseudo-azeotropic composition comprising dichloropropanol, hydrogen chloride and water. |
