A portable electronic device which performs power control by using a user pattern and a power control method using a user pattern in a portable electronic device are provided to convert a power mode of a portable electronic device to a sleep mode automatically when the portable electronic device is not used according to user pattern information of the portable electronic device to minimize battery consumption. A portable electronic device which performs power control by using a user pattern includes a user pattern information storage unit(120), a user pattern variation detector(140), a system controller(100), and a power manager(130). The user pattern information storage unit stores user pattern information on the portable electronic device. The user pattern variation detector detects whether the user pattern information stored in the user pattern information storage unit is changed. The system controller determines a power management mode in the current state of the portable electronic device on the basis of the user pattern information. The power manager receives a control signal from the system controller and controls power supply according to the determined power management mode.
