<p>New fluorescent dye compounds (I) consist of C-(N-heterocyclyl-substituted styryl)-N-(sulfanylalkyl)-pyridinium salts or their S-substituted derivatives. Pyridinium-substituted thiol derivative fluorescent dye compounds of formula (I) and their mineral or organic acid addition salts, optical and geometric isomers, hydrates and other solvates are new. het : saturated or unsaturated N-heterocyclyl residue; R g, R' g, R h, R' hH, halo, NH 2, mono- or dialkylamino, CN, COOH, OH, CF 3, acylamino, alkoxy, 2-4C mono- or polyhydroxyalkoxy, alkylcarbonyloxy, alkoxycarbonyl, alkylcarbonylamino, acylamino, CONH 2, alkylsulfonylamino, SO 2NH 2 or 1-16C alkyl (os by 1-12C alkoxy, OH, CN, COOH, NH 2, mono- or dialkylamino or 5-7 membered N-heterocyclyl (optionally containing additional heteroatom(s)); R' i, R'' iH or alkyl; R 1 - R 4H, alkyl, alkoxy, OH, CN, COOH, mono- or dialkylamino or 5-7 membered N-heterocyclyl (optionally containing additional heteroatom(s)); T adirect bond; one or more of SO 2, O, S, N(R), -N +>(R)(R 0>)- or CO; or cationic or non-cationic heterocycloalkyl or heteroaryl; R, R 0>H, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or aralkyl; m, n : 0-6; m + n : 1-10; M' : counter-anion; Y : H, alkali(ne earth) metal, NH 4 +>, PH 4 +>, mono-, di-, tri- or tetraalkyl-ammonium, mono-, di-, tri- or tetraalkyl-phosphonium or thiol protecting group; alkyl moieties have 1-4C unless specified otherwise; if (I) contains additional cationic moieties, at least one further counter-anion is present to preserve electro-neutrality. Independent claims are included for: (1) a dyeing composition (A) comprising (I) and optionally a reducing agent (II) in a cosmetic medium; (2) a method for dyeing keratin fibers, involving application of (A); and (3) a multi-compartment dyeing device, having a first compartment containing (I), a second compartment containing (II) and optionally a third compartment containing an oxidizing agent.
