An apparatus and a method for securing ATMs(Automatic Teller Machines) by using an RF card are provided to admit the ATM to go into a management mode by using authentication of an ATM secret number. An apparatus for securing ATMs(1001-100m) includes an in-charged person terminal(300), RF card readers for the ATMs and an RF card reader for the in-charged person terminal(310). The RF card readers for the ATMs and the RF card reader for the in-charged person terminal store each UID(Unified Identification), uniquely given to at least one and more preregistered RF cards, at each database. Therefore, the RF card readers for the ATMs determine whether the UID received from an approaching RF card is registered, and if so, the ATMs go into a management mode. When the RF card readers for the ATMs determine whether the UID received from an approaching RF card is registered, the ATMs require users to input secret numbers, authenticate the inputted secret numbers and then go into a management mode such that security can be improved. The RF card reader for the in-charged person terminal determines whether the UID received from the approaching RF card is registered and if so, admits state information or secret numbers of arbitrary ATMs to be received from a host(200). |
