In a process to manufacture semiconductors or solar cells by the application of a metal coating to a substrate, the substrate surface is directly coated by an electrolytic process. That part of the surface to be coated is first roughened and then coated with metal using an electrolyte at a suitable current density. The non-roughened surface remains untreated. Electrical contact to a high-resistance substrate (1) is effected outside the cell (10), avoiding metal coating of the electrolytic bath cells contacts (7).
