PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain a high SOx trap rate in a SOx trap catalyst.

SOLUTION: The output of an electric motor 27 is superposed to the output of an engine. The SOx trap catalyst 13 capable of capturing SOx contained in exhaust gas is arranged inside an engine exhaust passage in upstream of a NOx storage catalyst 14. The vehicle driving force by the engine and the vehicle driving force by the electric motor 27 are adjusted so that the SOx trap rate in the SOx trap catalyst 13 may be maintained at a predetermined high SOx trap rate.
