A C₈-C_2O alkylarene is converted to an arene carboxylic acid in an oxidation reactor by reacting the alkylarene with oxygen under oxidation conditions in the presence of an MC catalyst or bromine-free oxidation catalyst in a volumetrically expanded liquid reaction mixture in which a preferred solvent comprises a homogeneous phase of a monocarboxylic acid and carbon dioxide under elevated pressure, carbon dioxide partial pressure and temperature conditions.
