A toilet assembly (10) having a bowl (11) with a top rim (12) surrounding an opening (13). Pivotally attached to the bowl (11) is a lid (18) that is movable angularly between a closed position and an open position with respect to the opening (13). A catch (37) is operable to retain the lid (18) closed. Upon flushing being initiated, firstly air under pressure is delivered to the bowl (10) to evacuate the contents thereof, with water then being delivered to the bowl (10) to cover the trap (14).
