PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a modified polysaccharide that is obtained from a natural raw material, has high affinity for water or an alkaline aqueous solution and is highly stable in an aqueous solution. SOLUTION: The modified polysaccharide is obtained by an addition reaction of an unsaturated carbon bond of at least one compound selected from among 4-6C polycarboxylic acids having an unsaturated bond and maleic anhydride, to a polysaccharide.
