PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a machining method for a root rotor capable of enhancing the productivity. SOLUTION: Around the virtual center line c of the spindle 6 of an NC machining device, two coarse machining tools 17 and 27 and one coarse machining/finish machining tool 22 are installed in such an arrangement that their cutting edges lie on the side with the virtual center line, and the peripheral surface portions of a workpiece w given a shape assuming a tri-lobed root rotor in a prescribed angle range (for example, 90°) relative to the center lines of the respective robes r are subjected simultaneously to a coarse machining process while the workpiece is moved in reciprocation without rotating in such a condition that the blade parts of the tools are positioned mating with the robes r of the workpiece w, and after the workpiece w is turned 180°, the three remaining peripheral surface portions are subjected simultaneously to a coarse machining with the mating tools, whereby all peripheral surface portions are subjected to at least one coarse machining, and further a finish processing for the whole peripheral surface is conducted only with one coarse machining/finish processing tool 22 while the workpiece w is turned bit by bit with certain angles and moved in reciprocation along the virtual center line.
