PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device capable of automatically monitoring a circumferential state of a vehicle while maintaining the device compact and inexpensive. SOLUTION: A plurality of figures in predetermined shapes are projected in predetermined directions, the projected figures are photographed, and the plurality of projected figures which are photographed are compared with a prepared reference pattern to estimate states of projection destinations of the figures according to comparison results. The reference pattern is prepared preliminarily. Alternatively, a pattern which overlaps most among the plurality of photographed image is determined as the reference pattern. In another way, no reference pattern is used and a last photographed figure is compared with a currently photographed image. A vehicle is equipped with this state estimating device and the figures in the predetermined shapes are projected on a ground surface from right and left flanks or right and left ends of the vehicle to estimate whether a state of projection destinations indicates a nearly flat road.
