[Class 38 (iv).] In a regulating system, if the voltage of a generator rises above a predetermined value a relay 22 responds to effect an immediate reduction of excitation and thereafter responds to a lower value of voltage and may automatically regulate it to. that value. The invention is applicable to a, generator driven by a prime mover such as a water turbine and subject to overspeeding on removal of load. A Tirrill regulator 7 may be normally operative. On excessive voltage the relay 22 energizes an intermediate relay 34 which causes a contactor 39 to open and insert an adjustable resistance 16 into the field circuit of the generator. An auxiliary contact of the contactor 39 energizes a relay 26 which short-circuits a portion of resistance 24 in series with the relay 22 and renders it responsive to a lower voltage such as the normal generator voltage. The relay 22 thereupon acts as a regulator by periodically short-circuiting the resistance 16 to maintain the lower voltage. The relay 26 is latched open until reset by hand and closes an alarm circuit when operated. When the auxiliary switch 31 supplying the subordinate relays is fed from an exciter on the generator shaft a second auxiliary contact on the contactor 39 inserts a compensating resistance 42 in the circuit of its operating coil. |
