PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an axial flow water turbine and its operation method capable of reducing cavitation damage and vibration of runner vanes even at a site where the static suction head is shallow and a cavitation occurrence area is large. SOLUTION: This axial flow water turbine has a plurality of runner vanes 6a radially installed around a main shaft, and is constituted by applying a step 17 to the downstream side of a negative pressure surface of the runner vanes 6a so that the vane thickness becomes thin.
