摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an internal combustion engine capable of inhibiting generation of fuel pressure pulsation in a low pressure fuel passage caused by volume change of pressurizing chamber of a high pressure fuel pump, while ensuring open and close action of a shut off valve of the high pressure fuel pump. <P>SOLUTION: When pressure feed quantity of the high pressure fuel pump 50 is below predetermined judgment quantity, ECU 70 controls pressure feed quantity of the high pressure fuel pump 50 by changing open period of the shut off valve 64 during volume increase of the pressurizing chamber 60. The shut off valve 64 is normally closed during volume decrease of the pressurizing chamber 60, and pulsation caused by the high pressure pump is inhibited from being generated in the low pressure passage since reverse flow to the low pressure fuel passages such as fuel passages 33, 35, 39 does not occur. Quantity of fuel sucked in the pressurizing chamber 60 from the low pressure fuel passage gets small in suction stroke, and force sucking a valve element 64a of the shut off valve 64 in an open direction also gets small.
