PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an external heating type rotary kiln and its operating method providing stable control of a heating temperature by accurately measuring a temperature of an interior of the rotary kiln rotating around a shaft with a correlation with a temperature of an object to be treated. SOLUTION: The external heating type rotary kiln 1 is provided with a kiln inner cylinder 11 rotating around the shaft, and an outer cylinder 12 circulating heating gas around the kiln inner cylinder, and heat treatment of the object to be treated is carried out in the interior of the kiln inner cylinder while transferring it in an axial direction. The kiln inner cylinder is provided with a means 114 rotatably supported in a movable side end 13 movable in the axial direction, and a fixed side end 14 for measuring a thermal elongation amount of the kiln inner cylinder in the axial direction, and a plurality of non-contact type thermometers 126 measuring shell temperatures T11-T32 of plural positions in the axial direction of the kiln inner cylinder from a circumference wall part of the outer cylinder.
